Hourly Comic Day 2009

by Rev. Elgaroo Brenza

Hourly Comic Day has been going on for several years. Basically, whoever wants to makes a comic every hour that they are awake on February first. They then (usually) post them on The Forums for all to see (up to almost 250 this year!) It is a lot of fun, inspiring, and VERY challenging!

This is my first year trying it, and pretty much my first comic ever!P Let me know what you think.)

I will try to post slightly higher resolution versions soon, and also individual strip pages with additional notes and info about each strip.

NOTE! i am particularly bad at drawing people (without taking LOTS of time)! i have attempted to depict several aquantances in these comics. most of them look practically nothing like their subjects. if you are depicted and it looks hideous, i am that bad at drawing, PLEASE do not take offense!P i have tried to keep real people somewhat annonymous, but if you would like to be named / credited / linked to / whatever, just let me know.

I would love to get some feedback, but keep in mind this is practically my first comic ever, and I concieved, penciled, and inked each of these in less than an hour each, so go easy on me.P You can comment publically on my post on the forums (registration required) as well as check out everyone elses comics (no registration necessary) you can contact me on MySpace, or you can email me privately at the address below (imaged to avoid spambots):

I will (hopefully) soon begin posting a (hopefully) regular web comic strip called "Defective Robot Detective Agency", so feel free to bookmark it's address if you like my stuff. It will obviously be much cleaner and better planned than my hourlies, but will not necessarily about robots, or detectives, or anything...P You can also check out the rest of my website (ancient and crusty though it largely is), which includes some of my poetry and music.

TMI for the curious:

this is pretty much my first comic ever, other than a single four-panel comic i did in high school... i've also never really drawn very seriously, and have hardly drawn at all even un-seriously in many years... i have been a big fan of comics and have thought about them a lot and wanted to make some for a long time though, and i hope this inspires me to keep making them.D

i first woke up on Hourly Comic Day around 5:23 am. i'd been a bit under the weather, and my regular sleeping patterns were a bit disrupted. i'm usually pretty nocturnal, so it was very odd and random for me to wake up so early. i wasn't even really very awake for the few hours before i went back to sleep, but i did notice around 8 am that it was Hourly Comic Day (i'd set an alarm to remind me for 10 am, the earliest i could imagine being awake) at that point i did draw a couple comics, but went back to sleep until around 2 pm, a much more reasonable hour for me to be waking up, and when i consider myself to have awoken properly. hopefully no one is put off by the couple hours of initial, undocumented drowsiness, but i can assure you, i was just dicking around on the internet the whole time (mostly Wikipedia) and you're not missing anything.P

i penciled and inked "live", scanned LATE on the 2nd (at/after work) did digital layout and VERY minor cleanup on the 3rd, and posted to the forum LATE again on the 3rd. i've been working on getting it posted on my site, adding individual strip pages with notes, and eventually getting slightly higher resolution versions up here as well since. i was pretty sick since the 2nd, so sorry about the slowness...P i have not bothered spell-checking, and am a terrible speller. get over it.D also, while i do have some experience with scanning and Photoshop, i have no real experience with drawing or lettering for the web... i'm sorry some of the finer lettering and details haven't well weathered the reduction of resolution.P i will maybe try to make available slightly higher-res versions, or translations, or possibly even print some out if there's demand for them...

Well, thanks for coming by!D
